Science for Climate Action seminar series on Health Security, Water security and Climate Change will take place on 11 November 2020. In this session we will aim to discuss on the impact of Climate Change on water resources, and projected risk of water scarcity and reduction in surface water and groundwater resources, and discuss the inextricable link between climate change and health; focusing on climate-sensitive diseases, nutritional angle and more.
Session will feature prominent scientists in the field as below ;
- Professor Sir Andy Haines
Professor of Environmental Change and Public Health, Centre on Climate Change and Planetary Health,
London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine
Andy Haines was Director of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine from 2001- October 2010. He was a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for the 2nd and 3rd assessment exercises and was review editor for the health chapter in the 5th assessment. He chaired the Scientific Advisory Panel for the 2013 WHO World Health Report, the Rockefeller /Lancet Commission on Planetary Health (2014-15 and the European Academies Science Advisory Council working group on climate change and health (2018-19). He currently co-chairs the InterAcademy Partnership (140 science academies worldwide) working group on climate change and health and is also co-chairing the Lancet Pathfinder Commission on health in the zero-carbon economy. He has published many papers on topics such as the effects of environmental change on health and the health co-benefits of low carbon policies. His current research focuses on climate change mitigation, sustainable healthy food systems and complex urban systems for sustainability.
- Professor Dato’ Dr Azizan Abu Samah FASc
Director of the National Antarctic Research Centre and Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Earth and Ocean Sciences, University of Malaya
Dato Azizan is a professor in the field of Meteorology in the Department of Geography, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in University of Malaya. He is the Vice President of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) until 2018, was the Malaysian coordinator of an European Union research project SHIVA (Stratospheric ozone: Halogen Impacts in a Varying Atmosphere) and also a steering committee member of Asia Pacific Rim University World Institute Pacific Rim Cities Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies (APRU-CMAS). Professor Dato’ Dr Azizan Abu Samah is a fellow of the Malaysian Academy of Sciences and the Royal Meteorological Society, UK. He is an active researcher and is the principal investigator in a number of national and international research initiatives, working on air-sea interactions in the South China Sea, winter monsoon cold surges, severe Antarctic weather, tropical-polar teleconnection and climate change both in the tropics and the polar region
