Public Talk – An illegal journey, from forest to homes (Flora Group)

Date : Saturday, 5 May 2018
Time: 9.30 am – 10.30 am
Venue : MNS HQ Auditorium, KL

Invited Speaker : Pn Noorainie Awang Anak, former staff of TRAFFIC Southeast Asia.

The speaker will describe the ‘journey’ of certain flora species (including timber) from Malaysian forests and jungles which are ‘trafficked’ or obtained via illegal means including being collected by hobbyist, smuggled by poachers, which end up being processed and used as medicines, ingredient in cosmetics, sport and music equipment and others. For conservation work and preservation of local biodiversity to succeed, it makes sense to learn about the illegal trade of Malaysian flora (and fauna) and how our actions (or non-actions) will hinder or embolden/promote wildlife trafficking.

Excerpts from TRAFFIC website:
“Human well-being in both rural and urban areas depends on a diverse array of wild plant products from an even more diverse array of wild plant species. This includes species used for their medicinal and aromatic properties. An estimated 50,000–70,000 medicinal and aromatic species are harvested from the wild, with the annual global export value of pharmaceutical plants alone being over USD2.2 billion in 2011.”
