Assessment on the Distribution of Hornbills and Identification of Important Hornbill Landscapes (IHL) in Sarawak

After almost a year of hard work and dedication, the Hornbill Team from Malaysian Nature Society Kuching Branch has successfully completed a report on the ‘Assessment on the Distribution of Hornbills and Identification of Important Hornbill Landscapes (IHL) in Sarawak’.

Eight out of the  10 hornbill species in Malaysia are recorded in Sarawak and one of the species, Rhinoceros Hornbill is the official State crest of Sarawak. Despite that, studies on hornbill distribution and conservation in Sarawak are limited. The Report consists of the assessment which aims to fill in the knowledge gap of hornbills in Sarawak. The objectives are to compile and collate hornbill-centric information in Sarawak, to assess the collated information against the IHL criteria, to identify IHLs in Sarawak to help prioritize future hornbill conservation actions and to conduct a preliminary assessment of the status of hornbills at IHLs, including trends, threats, community perceptions towards hornbills and identify future conservation priorities at these sites, where feasible.

The Report was produced,  based on information available from published literature, online bird databases,  museum skin specimens, birding trip reports, scientific expedition reports, and information from interviews.  Findings and important information can be found in the Report  and hopefully you  are excited to  read about our efforts  to conserve  hornbills in Sarawak.
