Wetlands

Wetlands are classified as natural or artificial bodies of water that are static or flowing, fresh, brackish or salt such as peat lands, rivers, lakes, mangroves and marine waters that do not exceed 6 meters. Malaysia has 31 out of 42 types of wetlands identified by the Ramsar Convention. The Ramsar Convention is an international agreement that ensures the conservation of wetlands. Wetland areas that are vital according to these international standards are known as Ramsar Sites. In 2002, MNS was appointed the official national Ramsar CEPA-NGO Focal Point which works under the CEPA (Communication, Education & Public Awareness) component of the Ramsar Convention.

On World Wetland’s Day every year, MNS carries out activities to bring awareness toward the importance of wetland areas.
